The value of social media for your small business: 5 tips for success

At the beginning of each new month, the Studio Three 49 team is heavy into account planning and next month's content creation. I just finished batch writing captions for one of our clients - a pediatric dentist - and was walking home from my post at American Underground when I ran into one of my friends downtown here in Durham, NC, where I live.

"A pediatric dentist needs to be on social media?" he asked surprised when I shared what I'd been up to that day.

The answer is a resounding YES!

He got me thinking, as a digital marketer and social media manager, it's very easy for me to assume that everyone knows and understands the value of social media and the powerful impact it can have on your business. With 2 billion monthly active users on Instagram alone, there's an audience for everyone regardless of your industry or niche.

The Power of Social Media for Small Businesses

While many businesses focus their efforts on building a website and optimizing it for search engines (and that's definitely a step we always recommend!), many are still missing out on the incredible value that social media platforms bring to the table.

And it's not just about Instagram. Facebook has 2.96 billion users, LinkedIn stands at 930 million, and Pinterest serves 450 million users monthly. The numbers speak for themselves.

Still not convinced? Here's just a few reasons why your small business should learn to embrace social media if you haven't already:

Ability to boost visibility & local brand awareness: Your audience is on social media, and you should be, too. Regular postings can keep your business top-of-mind for local customers and beyond. In fact, 70% of shoppers report looking to Instagram to discover new products on the platform.

Opportunities to connect directly with your ideal clients: By sharing content tailored to your target audience, you're more likely to attract and engage the exact clientele you desire. Not sure about your target audience? Let's talk.

Regularly demonstrate your expertise & build credibility: Share insights, tips and industry news. When you consistently provide value, you build a reputation as a trusted expert.

Strengthen your "Know, Like, and Trust" factor: Social media is a space for authenticity. By sharing the human side of your business, stories and customer testimonials, you create a genuine bond with your audience. And when they're ready to purchase, they'll think of the brand they've come to know and trust—yours. Plus, they'll tell others about you and that's the best advertising!

5 Top Tips for Social Media Success

So now that you understand the value of having an active social media presence for your small business, how do you ensure you're most successful?

1. Choose the right platform: Not all social media platforms are created equal. Each platform attracts a different audience with different habits and behaviors. It’s important to research which platforms are most relevant to your business and your target audience. For example, if you offer professional services, LinkedIn may be a better platform for you than Instagram. On the other hand, if you have a retail business, Facebook and Instagram may be more effective for showcasing products and promotions.

2. Consistent posting: Keep a regular posting schedule. This not only ensures that your content is seen, but also tells your audience that you're active and engaged. Aim for at least 3-4 posts per week, or whatever is manageable for you. Just post! It’s equally important to have a plan for what you are posting. A content strategy also helps build consistency by outlining the themes, topics and types of content you will post. This can include educational posts, promotional posts, industry news and behind-the-scenes glimpses. Your content should align with your brand and voice while providing value to your audience.

3. Quality content & on-brand images: Visuals are crucial on platforms like Instagram. Ensure your images resonate with your brand’s aesthetic. Tools like Canva can help maintain a consistent look and feel. It's not about quantity, but quality. Share content that educates, entertains or inspires your audience. Ask yourself: "Would I share this?" Also, consider incorporating video to engage in a more dynamic way.

4. Track your metrics and adjust strategy: Monitoring your social media metrics allows you to track the success of your efforts and adjust your strategy accordingly. Key metrics to track include reach & impressions, follower growth and engagement rates. Review this data at least monthly to identify what content is resonating with your audience and what areas need improvement.

5. Engage directly with followers: Acknowledge new followers, respond to comments, direct messages (DMs) and mentions. Remember, social media is supposed to be social! It's about making authentic connections, starting conversations and building relationships. Personal engagement can turn a follower into a loyal customer.

From Conversations to Conversions

Always keep in mind that behind every like, comment and share, there's a real person with pains, passions and goals. Social media is your chance to start a conversation to learn more and gain valuable insights about your audience that will impact your future growth.

So don't be shy. A simple reply or acknowledgement could be the turning point between a one-time visitor and a long-term customer.
