How to develop a mindset for success

Our thoughts become our words, our words become our beliefs, our beliefs become our actions, our actions become our habits and our habits become our realities.

You've probably heard that one before, right? But have you stopped to really break it down and think about what that means?

It means that in any given moment, you have the power to make choices that will completely change your reality and push you closer to — or further away from! — your business goals. The choice is yours, and it all starts with having a growth mindset.

Growth mindset versus fixed mindset

So what exactly is a growth mindset, and how do you develop one?

Mindset is what separates the best from the rest. Think of it like your very own built in superpower.

In its simplest terms, a growth mindset is choosing to see the possibilities instead of the obstacles. The opportunities instead of the challenges. It's about being intentional to reframe your negative thoughts and feelings with potential.

It's the foundation on which all of your goals can be achieved.

Developing a growth mindset takes practice and effort, but following these five tips, you'll be well on your way.

Tip 1: Make the decision

You have the power of choice, and your success or failure is very often decided right between your two ears. Pick a goal that you're currently working towards. Now close your eyes and make the decision right now to believe you can improve and get better. Visualize the business you're creating and live into the final result. The more you believe in your ability to succeed, the more effort you will put towards your goals and the more likely you will be to achieve success.

Tip 2: Embrace your imperfections

They're not flaws, only areas for personal growth and improvement. No one is perfect, and you really can accomplish anything you set your mind to. You're only selling yourself short by choosing to focus on your failures instead of celebrating your victories.

Tip 3: Find the proof

And speaking of victories, we know you've had some! Yet, our brains are so quick to point out everything that could go wrong — why we aren’t qualified, who already does the thing we’re trying to do and does it so much better. But stop for one second and think back about all of the reasons why you are qualified and the very perfect person to do just the thing you’re trying to do. Build a foundation of proof that your new goal is possible, available and totally achievable for you.

Tip 4: Watch your words

Start paying more attention to the words that come out of your mouth and rattle around in your head. Replace words like, I can't, I wish and I want, with I can, I do and I am. What you focus on, you create more of. So say buh-bye to any habitual ways of speaking and thinking that don’t support you and your goals and train yourself to focus on beliefs and thoughts that bring you success, joy and peace.

Tip 5: Track your progress

Keep a journal and track what works and doesn't work for you. What goal did you set? Did you achieve it? Why or why not? Research shows writing down your goals is strongly associated with success, so take 5-10 minutes every day to take inventory of what went well and what you want to do differently to get you closer to your goals.

Mastering a growth mindset is all about staying aware. Shift your focus when you catch yourself thinking thoughts that aren't in alignment with the goals you're working towards and who you want to become. It's more about who you're being, not what you're doing.

Today can be better than yesterday, and you have the power with a growth mindset to make it so.
